Liberty Bell Trail (completed)
The extension of Liberty Trail from Coffer Woods Rd to Burke Rd along Pohick Creek is approved and final construction bids under evaluation by Fairfax County Parks and Trails. Parks and Trails expect the project award no later than this spring with construction to start in the summer. The construction period is 12 months. Once the project is completed, the Fairfax Trail system will extend from the Burke Center VRE train station to Burke Rd and end at the Burke Rd curve. This is a significant extension of the Fairfax trail system in our community and provides a safe alternative to biking, running, and walking along Burke Rd near the Burke Nursery.
Liberty Bell Trail to the Burke Station Square Park (design funded)
Fairfax Parks and Trails has approved the design of the next increment of the Liberty Bell Trail. This segment will connect the already approved project with the Burke Station Square playground and park located behind the Ridge Ford Drive loop. The next increment will be to connect the Liberty Bell Trail to Old Keene Mill Rd. This last increment is a future project still in the planning stages.
Liberty Bell Trail Extension (community initiative)
As part of the Burke Rd curve project, the Springfield District supervisor asked VDoT and FDoT to address resident concerns around extending the Liberty Bell Trail along Burke Rd to connect the approved Liberty Bell Trail to Rolling Rd for bicycle, pedestrian, and vehicle safety. This is a difficult project that involves VDoT, FDot, Fairfax Parks and Trails, the District Supervisors office and our Virginia Delegate. The path forward is not clear and may require future community engagement to bring this to a successful resolution. We will work this diligently and keep you informed. The project affects residents, commuters, bikers, runners, and the safety of our children. Keep an eye on this project for future development.
